    Dealer Notes

This is the kind of car we love. One we saved from the waste stream. The previous owner hit something on the road and damaged the engine. It was "totaled" by the insurance company and we bought it and rebuilt the engine. (done by a factory trained ASE technician). It is not a salvage title because we bought it directly from the owner (a long story that we will be happy to review with you). The body and frame were untouched by the damage and it looks and now drives amazing. It's one of the smaller Volvo sedans but it actually roomy inside and is quick, agile and easy to park. In addition to rebuilding the engine we've give it a full servicing with new oil, filter, battery, recharged the A.C., new belts, tensioner pulley, etc. This car runs great and has a lot of living to do. We will be happy to go over the repairs and its history with you.

    • Exceeded my expectations!

By Ryan on Thursday, March 11, 2021

I bought this car used from the original owner with about 110,000 miles. I have owned the car for almost 4 years and put about 45,000 miles so far. The car has been a pleasure to own. It's a compact luxury car I paid next to nothing for. It's true it does not hold it's value very well, but that's great news if you buy used like I did! I have taken the car to the mechanic once for a faulty oil sump, which apparently is common on this car. Other than that I have had no issues. Everything else works beautifully. The car is the base model but it still comes standard with a sunroof, Bluetooth phone capabilities, and fully automatic windows, which were uncommon in 2009. The downsides are the car is on the small side with limited storage space. The front seats are fine but the back seats are cramped for adults. I also bought the naturally aspirated 2.4 liter 5 cylinder engine, and while it does sound nice under acceleration, it is definitely not a car that's wants to be pushed to the edge. If you are looking for sport, go for the turbocharged 2.5 liter engine. The car does drive very well, it's nimble and can take corners with no problem. It's small, but drives like a big car on the highway, feeling solid and smooth. Uncommon for small cars. For what I paid for this car, it has been phenomenal and exceeded all expectations. No other car compares with its standard amenities and style for this price point. It may be a small economy car, but it is still just as luxurious and stylish as it's rivals, for way less money on the used market.
    • Always in the shop!

By leavingvolvoforgood on Thursday, July 10, 2008

I have had my S40 for 3 years, and it is in the shop about every three months for something or another. I have already had the transmission replaced, and the car only has 25,000 miles on it. The warranty is about to expire, and I feel I cannot keep this car without a warranty to cover all the expensive fixes. When it runs, it is a perfect car, but it is always in the shop!

I have never had a car with so many problems after so few miles: AC, power locks, brakes, airbag, engine. In one year, I have taken this car in for repairs seven times.
